To be sure, said Israel Zmora, there is a difference between the publication of Lev Afor at the start of its operation, many years ago, and publication today. Things didn't unfold according to a detailed and explicitly predetermined plan, but in gradual fashion, one chapter after another. At first the intention was to cultivate literary endeavors, especially stories combining text and paintings, which the ordinary publisher may not be too avid about, whether for fear of premature "innovations" or fear of material losses. From that point on things changed and a different intention arose regarding publication - to bridge over all the generations, to publish all the important books.
Today we have no lofty purpose, other than to point to the books that we publish, as if to say—here, these are the books we mean. And anyone who peruses our books will easily discern what strength lies in the publication of Lev Afor at this time, as also what its future aspiration is.
מובן מאליו, אומר ישראל זמורה, שיש הבדל בין הוצאת לב אפור בראשית פעולותיה, לפני שנים רבות, לבין ההוצאה היום. הדברים לא באו לפי תכנית מפורטת ומפורשת מראש, אלא בהדרגה ובבחינת פרק אחרי פרק. תחילה הייתה הכוונה לטפח דברי ספרות, ובייחוד סיפורים המשלבים טקסט וציור, שאין המו"ל הרגיל להוט אחריהם, אם מחשש ל"חידושים" בטרם זמן, ואם מחשש להפסדים חומריים. מכאן ואילך השתנו פני הדברים והתפתחה בהוצאה כוונה אחרת – לגשר על פני כל הדורות, לפרסם את כל הספרים החשובים.
היום אין לנו עוד מטרה נעלה, מלבד להצביע על הספרים שאנו מוציאים לאור, כמו כדי להורות – הנה הספרים שאנו מתכוונים אליהם. וכל המעיין בספרינו יוכל על נקלה להבחין מה כוחה של הוצאת לב אפור בשעה זו, וגם מה שאיפתה להבא.
